Dina’s Docket: Weekly Trump Recap (3/15/24)
Friday, March 15, 2024
Another week, another round of updates in the many ongoing Trump trials. (The nonpartisan nonprofit JUST SECURITY has a fabulous master calendar of key dates in Trump’s trials.)
GEORGIA
Judge McAfee ruled today in favor of Fani Willis, saying that she will not be removed from the case against Trump in Georgia because there was no actual conflict of interest. Because the judge said there was an apparent conflict of interest, Willis has to remove her special prosecutor — Nathan Wade — who she had a relationship with. However, she was going to do that anyway because there was no way she was going to put him in front of a jury and have the jury dissect any interaction between the two of them instead of focusing on the case against Trump. Ultimately, this is a big win for Fani Willis and a huge loss for Trump.
The same judge also ruled earlier in the week that six of the charges against Trump — including the one about the phone call — wasn't specific enough. So, they have to go back to the grand jury if they want to recharge them. Still, all the other charges against Trump and his co-defendants remain.
NEW YORK
Change your calendars because the New York state criminal case involving the hush money payments will not go against Trump this month as planned. Prosecution has asked for 30 days of an extension in response to Trump who had asked for a 90-day extension because the DOJ just dumped a bunch of documents on the prosecution (despite the fact that they asked for them over a year ago).
If anybody still thinks that somehow the DOJ is ‘in the pocket’ and against Trump, this is proof otherwise.
FLORIDA
Judge Cannon made a significant ruling against Trump this week, failing to dismiss his case because of the argument he tried to make that the Espionage Act was ‘too vague’ to be enforceable. Thank goodness for us all: the judge rejected it.
