Dina’s Docket: Weekly Trump Recap (2/2/24)
Friday, February 2, 2024
Another week, another round of updates in the many ongoing Trump trials. (The nonpartisan nonprofit JUST SECURITY has a fabulous master calendar of key dates in Trump’s trials.)
It's never a dull legal week with former president Donald Trump. And let's say the theme this time is it's not great to be one of his allies. It starts with his attorney, Alina Habba, being threatened with sanctions for failing to do basic fact checks in order to get that claim across — that there was somehow a conflict of interest with a judge in the case involving E. Jean Carroll — which wasn't even true.
Then, at the end of the week, there were perjury negotiations with the former chief financial officer for Donald Trump and the Trump Organization — the person who handled all of his finances. This, if he goes to jail, will be the second time in two years he goes to jail because of things he did for Trump. The latest has to do with his testimony in the civil fraud trial brought by Attorney General Letitia James.
This testimony and the claim to perjury will now set back the ruling that we are waiting to hear by a few weeks. Again, what we will know is how many millions of dollars the Trump Organization owes and whether they will continue to do business in New York. That's been delayed because of this perjury charge and the charges related to his testimony around the penthouse.
And if you remember, Trump and that organization said the penthouse was 30,000 square feet, even though it was only 10,000 square feet — and the judge said you certainly know how big your own house is. And this claim just one lie too many for the judge — and it's proving one lie, too many for Allen Weisselberg.
